Donald Trump recently made a puzzling comment regarding the Cold War, leaving many people confused.
In anticipation of his meeting with Vladimir Putin scheduled for Friday, August 15, at a US military base in Alaska, President Trump has been discussing Russia more frequently.
The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine is expected to dominate the agenda, especially given Trump’s warning to Moscow about facing unprecedented sanctions if a peaceful resolution isn’t reached. The conversation carries significant weight.
Earlier this week, Trump raised eyebrows when he questioned whether people were surprised that Russia could retaliate against the US through a large-scale cyber-attack.
However, his latest comment involving the Cold War left people perplexed, considering the Cold War ended over thirty years ago.
On Tuesday morning, August 12, the 79-year-old took to his Truth Social account to comment on the media’s coverage of his upcoming discussion with Putin.
He stated: “If I got Moscow and Leningrad free, as part of the deal with Russia, the Fake News would say that I made a bad deal!”
However, his post appeared to include a historical inaccuracy.
Commenters were quick to point out that Leningrad has not been the name of a Russian city since 1991, when it was changed to St. Petersburg following a referendum.
Additionally, some noted that in 1987, Trump and his former wife, Ivana, visited Moscow to explore a potential site for a Trump Hotel and spent time in the city.
One user commented, “Trump mentioning Leningrad is wild, considering the city hasn’t existed since 1991.”
Saint Petersburg, initially known as Petrograd and later Leningrad, was established by Tsar Peter the Great on May 27, 1703, and named after the apostle Saint Peter.
Saint Petersburg is closely linked with the emergence of the Russian Empire and served as the capital of the Tsardom of Russia and the Russian Empire from 1712 to 1918.
Trump’s complete rant included: “Very unfair media is at work on my meeting with Putin.
“Constantly quoting fired losers and really dumb people like John Bolton, who just said that, even though the meeting is on American soil, ‘Putin has already won.’ What’s that all about? We are winning on EVERYTHING.”
“The Fake News is working overtime (No tax on overtime!). If I got Moscow and Leningrad free, as part of the deal with Russia, the Fake News would say that I made a bad deal! But now they’ve been caught. Look at all of the real news that’s coming out about their CORRUPTION. They are sick and dishonest people, who probably hate our Country. But it doesn’t matter because we are winning on everything!!! MAGA.”
This outburst comes just days before his meeting with Putin, with the White House having to address some confusion when Trump erroneously stated he was flying to Russia instead of Alaska for the meeting.
Press secretary Karoline Leavitt clarified: “Perhaps there are plans in the future to travel to Russia.”
