Two teenagers were among five people wounded in a burst of gun violence across New York City late Sunday, while a 29-year-old man was killed in a separate shooting, police said.
The youngest victim, a 17-year-old boy, was shot in the chest around 9:15 p.m. Behind a NYCHA building on Beach 40th Street near Beach Channel Drive in Far Rockaway, according to police. He was transported to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center and listed in stable condition. Law enforcement sources said the gunfire stemmed from a dispute, though the teen appeared not to have known the shooter.
Around the same time in the Bronx, an 18-year-old was struck when someone opened fire with a rifle at East 175th Street and Bathgate Avenue in Tremont. He was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital in stable condition. Police said two suspects fled in a vehicle and a rifle was recovered at the scene.
The night’s sole fatality was Luis Cano, 29, who was shot in the chest around 7:50 p.m. On Lafayette Avenue near Hunts Point Avenue. Cano, who lived about a mile from where he was attacked, was pronounced dead at Lincoln Medical Center. The male suspect remained at large Monday and the motive was still under investigation, authorities said.
Hours earlier, two senior citizens were wounded in a drive-by shooting as they played dominoes just blocks from Yankee Stadium. A 65-year-old man was shot in the right leg and a 72-year-old man was struck in the right hand just after 6 p.m. At East 157th Street and Gerard Avenue in Concourse Village. Law enforcement sources said the unidentified shooter fired in their direction while driving past. It was not clear whether either man was targeted. Both were taken to Lincoln Medical Center in stable condition.
The violence capped a week of sharply elevated gun crime in the city. Between Sept. 7 and Sunday, police recorded 22 shootings with 28 victims citywide. Those figures more than doubled from the comparable week in 2025, when 10 shootings with 11 victims were reported. The Bronx accounted for 14 of the week’s shooting incidents, or nearly 64 percent, with 19 of the 28 victims in the northernmost borough — 11 in Bronx South and eight in Bronx North.
Despite the weekly surge, year-to-date shootings remain down overall. Police statistics show 471 incidents with 573 victims this year, compared to 520 incidents with 652 victims in 2025.
