Understanding the ‘Zip Coding’ Dating Trend: Your Partner Might Be Doing It Unknowingly

Here is a comprehensive breakdown of the ‘zip coding’ dating trend that has become quite popular in the online dating scene.

The journey through the dating world can be complex as individuals figure out the best ways to meet new people and make a lasting impression.

Thanks to platforms like TikTok and other social media, there are numerous trends available to assist those seeking guidance.

While some of these trends can be extremely beneficial, others might add more complexity to an already chaotic dating environment.

‘Zip coding’ is the latest trend captivating the dating scene, and its meaning can vary based on who you ask.

The most prevalent form of this trend involves users of dating apps setting their search radius to a minimal distance, essentially matching them with individuals within their local zip code. However, there’s another interpretation of the trend that can be more contentious.

Surprisingly, your partner might engage in this trend without your awareness.

This version entails someone being exclusive with a partner while in their home region but considering themselves single when outside their zip code.

Commenting on the trend, dating coach Amy Chan explained to USA Today, “We expect everything to be tailored, fast and frictionless, as if love should work like food delivery. But that approach can become narcissistic, focused on what’s easiest for us and what appeals to our egos, rather than what fosters real connection.”

Chan further stated, “When you make dating about convenience first and connection second, you’re filtering out people for reasons that don’t actually matter. It’s less about being open to love and more about being ruled by ego.”

While meeting someone close to where you reside is often ideal, Chan advises against restricting oneself to dates within their zip code.

She elaborated, “A client of mine had a strict ‘downtown only’ rule. Then she matched with a guy who lived in the suburbs. I encouraged her to go on the date and she did.”

“After a few dates, she was sharing how it was easy to talk to him, and there appeared to be a lot of alignment in values, but she was still stuck on the location thing. I told her to focus on the green flags instead of his ZIP code. Four years later, they’re still together. Oh and guess what? She now lives in the suburbs with him.”
