Understanding TikTok’s Group 7 Movement and Its Impact on Real-Life Gatherings

The number seven has found its way back into the spotlight, primarily due to TikTok’s influence.

Recently, social media users may have encountered the term ‘Group 7’ while browsing their feeds.

This new trend sweeping the internet involves individuals claiming membership in the mysterious group, though specifics remain vague.

It’s important not to confuse this with the ‘6, 7’ meme, which is causing some frustration among parents and educators worldwide.

Group 7’s impact has now expanded beyond the digital realm, as participants plan their inaugural in-person gathering in London on Friday (October 24).

Despite its growing fame, many remain puzzled about the nature of Group 7.

What led to its creation, what does it entail, and how can one become part of this exclusive online community?

The trend originates from a TikTok clip by indie singer-songwriter Sophia James.

The former American Idol contestant aimed to capture the TikTok algorithm’s attention—and she succeeded!

In one evening, she uploaded several videos numbered one to seven, each describing a different group assignment.

Her latest single, So Unfair, accompanies each video.

At the time of writing, the Group 7 video had amassed 31.7 million views.

Essentially, Sophia’s strategy served as an ingenious promotional move, though she nearly refrained from posting the now-viral Group 7 video, as she revealed to the New York Times.

Group 7 members have embraced their elite status, describing themselves as the internet’s trendsetters, glamorous personas, or having ‘billionaire status,’ among other descriptions.

Social media users eagerly joined in, sharing their own videos and memes celebrating Group 7’s allure.

Even celebrities, such as Outer Banks star Madelyn Cline and activist Malala Yousafzai, are partaking in the trend.

The San Francisco 49ers recently posted a video of the team dancing, captioned: “How it feels being a part of group 7.”

Membership in a Group depends entirely on which of Sophia’s videos TikTok’s algorithm delivers to you.

Essentially, you must have TikTok’s favor to be included. Simply searching and watching the video yourself doesn’t qualify.

You must be chosen! (In other words, spend enough time online…)

Sophia took the Group 7 concept even further by organizing a real-world meet-up.

On her website, she stated: “This is the funniest thing I have ever seen and think you should all meet in real life.”

The first official gathering is scheduled for this Friday (October 24) in London, at The Bedford Pub in Balham starting at 8pm.

Sophia hinted that a Los Angeles meet-up is also in the planning stages.
