Jameela Jamil, known for her role in The Good Place, recently shared an incident where she experienced an accidental orgasm in front of 6,000 people. Experts have shed light on how such an unexpected situation could occur.
While everyone has different triggers for arousal, it’s unusual to think about being turned on while alone on stage with thousands of attendees. Yet, during a DJ set at a Young Farmers Ball—a social event for those in the farming sector—Jamil found herself in this predicament.
Speaking to podcast host Romesh Ranganathan, Jamil recounted the episode where she placed her DJ decks atop large speakers. She explained, “I had to DJ on the speakers, but the vibration of the bass was awakening something in my groin area. And so, I started having an orgasm in front of 6,000 people and I’m trying my best to cover it up, but it’s very intense.”

Though not a common experience, experts affirm that accidental orgasms can occur without direct physical contact. Searah Deysach, a sex educator and owner of the Chicago-based pleasure-product company Early to Bed, told Well and Good that it’s essentially “an orgasm that somebody has when they’re not actively seeking an orgasm.” She elaborated, “It comes via other means than direct conscious genital stimulation.”
Given the spontaneous nature of such reactions, these occurrences are not extensively researched. However, Deysach noted they are “relatively normal in the sense that it can happen to anybody.”

Jessica O’Reilly, PhD, host of the Sex With Dr. Jess podcast, also discussed the phenomenon, indicating that some individuals might be more susceptible to these experiences, especially those who are easily aroused. She suggested that mental state plays a role as well. “It may be related to sexual excitability or mindfulness. If you’re present in your body and you allow it to receive stimulation without inhibition, you might be more likely to have spontaneous orgasms,” O’Reilly explained.
When this mindset aligns with physical conditions that might unintentionally stimulate—such as standing next to large speakers—you could be in a situation conducive to an accidental orgasm.

O’Reilly further identified several other possible triggers for accidental orgasms to Well and Good. So, if you ever experience an unforeseen climax, at least now you know some potential reasons why it might happen!
