Unsettling messages Bryan Kohberger’s mother sent him days following Idaho murders

Bryan Kohberger’s mother sent him a disturbing text message just days following his murder of four University of Idaho students.

In July, Kohberger entered a guilty plea for one count of burglary and four counts of first-degree murder.

The victims, Kaylee Goncalves, Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, and Madison Mogen, were tragically killed in their residence in Moscow, Idaho, in November 2022.

Kohberger received a sentence of four consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole or appeal. His plea agreement ensured that he would not face the death penalty, which remains legal in Idaho.

Currently, Kohberger is held at Idaho Maximum Security Institution in Kuna, but he has requested a transfer, alleging sexual harassment by other inmates.

While Kohberger has confessed to the murders, a motive for his heinous actions remains undisclosed nearly three years later. As a result, many questions linger about this tragic case that claimed the lives of four young adults.

New evidence continues to emerge in the case against Kohberger, driven by ongoing public interest. Heather Barnhart, Senior Director of Forensic Research at Cellebrite, and Jared Barnhart, Head of CX Strategy and Advocacy at Cellebrite, recently provided Newsweek with additional information about text exchanges involving Kohberger and his mother, Maryann Kohberger.

“He was on the phone with her for hours (on Nov. 17, 2022), but that night, he received a link from his mom,” Jared explained to NewsNation.

The link reportedly led to a news article detailing how Xana Kernodle had bruises on her body and the struggle she put up.

Jared added, “Looking at the timeline a little bit, you can tell that they’re actually speaking on the phone. What that tells us, and we can assume, is that they were talking about the Idaho murders on that night, and then the next morning, there’s just kind of nothing.”

Following this, the mother-son pair appeared not to discuss the incident further. Maryann instead texted her son about a girl who was ‘very sweet to the older lady customers’ at a coffee shop.

“I have no idea what that is,” Jared commented on this, “but there’s just no context between talking about the murders the night before and then this thing the next morning.”
