US athletes’ shocked reaction to China’s gold-winning pose on Olympic podium goes viral

A perfectly timed photograph has captured the hilarious reaction of a US athlete upon noticing the celebratory pose of the Chinese athletes after securing a gold medal.

Thanks to technological advancements, we can capture virtually everything on camera, whether for better or worse.

When it comes to the Olympics, one might assume the primary focus would be on documenting the most impressive athletic performances the world has ever witnessed.

While all the cameras in stadiums are used to capture these moments, they also manage to seize equally brilliant moments (or comical mishaps).

A photo captured the moment when Olympic diver Kassidy Cook glanced over and saw how the Chinese diving gold medalists Chen Yiwen and Chang Yani were celebrating – her reaction appeared as if straight out of a cartoon.

Making their Olympic debut, 22-year-old Chang and 24-year-old Chen managed to surpass the US and British teams in the women’s synchronized 3-metre springboard final last Saturday (July 27).

The duo scored 337.68, beating the US team of Sarah Bacon and Kassidy Cook (314.64) and Great Britain’s Yasmin Harper and Scarlett Mew Jensen (302.28), who took bronze.

However, a photo taken shortly after the medal ceremony has been circulating on social media.

The viral image shows Cook’s jaw practically hitting the floor as Chen held her partner Chang in a bridal carry pose for a picture.

“That’s the face of ‘wait that’s so cute, we should’ve done that too’,” one social media user joked.

“The US team’s reaction is priceless! It’s always interesting to see how athletes from different countries respond to each other’s celebrations,” commented another person.

“That is so wholesome omg and winning a gold medal together !?! Slayyy,” a third person wrote.

“That reaction is like a mix of shock and ‘Did we just get schooled?’ Love the drama of sports!” joked another.

Despite the amusing reaction, some Twitter users have speculated that the reason the Chinese athletes appeared so comfortable together is because they are actually a couple. However, neither athlete has publicly confirmed this.

Those suggesting the duo are a couple have pointed to multiple pictures on their social media pages showing them together intimately.

Nonetheless, as this remains unconfirmed, most people have simply praised the two for their achievement and the close relationship they share while competing for their country.
