Surveillance cameras inside a South Los Angeles assisted-living facility recorded a maintenance worker pulling a handgun from a shopping cart and shooting three co-workers in the lobby Monday morning.
Darryl Arnette Barnes, 60, had reportedly spoken four words immediately before the violence erupted at the Progressive Home for the Elderly. “I’m tired of this,” he allegedly said, according to the footage and police accounts.
The grainy video shows Barnes retrieving the weapon from the cart and firing at a colleague. He then moved to the opposite side of a counter and discharged additional rounds, the footage reveals. During the chaos, one person was seen diving over the counter in a desperate attempt to escape.
Officers located and arrested Barnes without incident inside the multi-story facility, which houses approximately 100 low-income seniors. LAPD Capt. Mike Bland confirmed the shooting’s location and the suspect’s apprehension in remarks to The Post. “They are all believed to be employees, suspect included,” Bland said. “The shooting itself is believed to have occurred in the lobby of building. He [the suspect] was located by responders inside of the building.”
The three victims, all employees of the facility, were transported to hospitals following the attack. A woman in her 40s and a woman in her 60s were listed in stable condition, while a man in his 60s remained in critical condition. Authorities have not publicly identified any of the victims.
Barnes now faces three counts of attempted murder. A judge set his bail at $4 million, and a conviction could result in a life sentence.
The Progressive Home for the Elderly operates in connection with the Progressive Community Missionary Baptist Church. The facility’s senior pastor addressed the violence in an interview with KTLA, speaking about broader tensions that can fuel such incidents.
“My biggest prayer is that we figure out a way to have peace with one another,” Pastor Jason Malveaux told the station. “It doesn’t have to always escalate to hot tempers.”
The shooting unfolded in the facility’s lobby during morning hours, with elderly residents present in the building. The footage captures the sudden transition from mundane activity to violence, as Barnes allegedly moved through the space with the weapon before being subdued by responding officers.
Barnes remains in custody as prosecutors pursue the attempted murder charges against him.
