Imagine the biggest cave you can. No, bigger. Even bigger than that. Now what if we told you that cave also contained an entire jungle and a river?
Son Doong Cave is located in the Quang Binh district of Vietnam and it’s the largest cave on Earth. A local villager first discovered the cave in 1991, but it wasn’t known to the public at large until British explorers found it just five years ago.
To enter the cave, you have to rappel down eighty meters.
Of course, you’d have to be fortunate to even be given the chance to take a tour. Only 224 people are allowed to visit each year.
The cave is so large, the tour takes six days and you still won’t nearly see it all.
The largest caverns are big enough to fit an entire city block.
The name Son Doong means “Mountain River”, and comes from the water that speeds through the caverns.
No one knows yet what the source of the water is, but this March, a team from the British Cave Research Association is going to try to find out.
