Volunteers Risk Their Lives To Feed Starving Animals Left At Gaza’s Abandoned Zoos

The horrific human cost of the ongoing conflict in Gaza is all over the media, but hundreds of animals in abandoned zoos in the area have been suffering in silence — until now.

Zoos in cities like Khan Younis, Gaza, have no income as residents flee the war-torn area and so the animals are often left to starve.

But rescue workers and volunteers, part of Four Paws International, are putting their lives at risk to feed the forgotten tigers, leopards, foxes, apes and birds in the area’s zoos.

They currently organize shipments of food from Jordan to the 28-square mile area, which has as many as 6 zoos, and are working on a longer-term solution.

Four Paws also provide desperately-needed medicine and care to sick animals who, due to the lack of visitors and income, aren’t cared for by the zoo.

And although Four Paws are concerned the situation is getting worse, news of their incredible work is spreading online and donations have come pouring in.

Through crowdfunding and the public’s generosity, they’ve already raised over $12,000 and are hoping to increase their rescue mission to help more animals at another abandoned zoo.
