Looking forward to the newly announced Tomb Raider live-action series? In the meantime, there are several movies based on the iconic gaming franchise that you can watch right now.
The Prime series is scheduled to start filming in January 2026. Amazon MGM Studios recently confirmed that Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner will take on the role of Lara Croft.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge will be the creator, writer, and an executive producer of the series. Jonathan van Tulleken has been brought on as director and executive producer, while Chad Hodge will serve as an executive producer and co-showrunner alongside Waller-Bridge.
Discussing the upcoming video game adaptation, Waller-Bridge expressed her enthusiasm: “I’m so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team.
“It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving. Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artifacts out… Croft is coming…”
In response, Turner shared her excitement: “I am thrilled beyond measure, to be playing Lara Croft. She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many – and I am giving everything I’ve got.
“They’re massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands. I can’t wait for you all to see what we have cooking.”
While we have a bit of a wait before the live-action series graces Prime, there are older films available if you’re in need of a Tomb Raider fix.
The 2001 film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider is a great starting point, featuring a young Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft and also starring Daniel Craig, making it a star-studded affair.
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider can be accessed through Hoopla, and it’s also streamable on Prime. Additionally, it’s available for purchase or rent on AppleTV.
Then there’s the 2018 film Tomb Raider, though it’s not available through a Netflix subscription. However, you can purchase or rent it on platforms like AppleTV and Prime Video.
Alicia Vikander took on the role of Lara Croft in this movie, which received a mixed reception at the time, earning a 52 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Despite this, the future of the Tomb Raider franchise looks promising.
“Lara Croft is one of the most recognizable and iconic video game characters of all time,” stated Vernon Sanders, head of global television at Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios, regarding the live-action series.
“We are thrilled to have the wonderfully talented Sophie Turner bring this character to life who is defined by her courage, strength, and unshakable resolve. Led by the brilliant Phoebe Waller-Bridge, this series will honor the beloved Tomb Raider legacy while delivering fresh adventures to fans worldwide.”
