Whoopi Goldberg makes unexpected admission about her ‘hit-and-run’ sex life

Whoopi Goldberg has opened up about her current approach to dating, describing her romantic style as “hit-and-runs.”

The Sister Act actor, 70, has been married three times and has previously been frank about how those relationships felt for her, once saying she didn’t believe she was ever truly in love with the men she married.

She told Piers Morgan back in 2011: “You have to really be committed to them… I don’t have that commitment. I’m committed to my family.”

Goldberg first married drug counselor Alvin Martin in 1973. That same year, they welcomed their daughter, Alex Martin, before the marriage ended in divorce in 1979.

She later married cinematographer David Claessen (1986–1988), followed by union organizer Lyle Trachtenberg (1994–1995).

Over the years, she has also had live-in relationships, including with actor Frank Langella and playwright David Schein, and has been linked to other well-known names such as Timothy Dalton and Ted Danson.

More recently, she offered a glimpse into where her head is at now when it comes to sex and relationships during a discussion on The View.

The panel were talking about a Cosmopolitan essay in which a woman admitted she sometimes missed being single, even while in a happy relationship—raising the question of whether it’s normal to fantasize about single life.

A major theme of the essay was longing for spontaneity: impromptu nights out and casual flings.

As the conversation unfolded, Goldberg weighed in with: “I bar hop, I go hang.” When co-host Joy Behar asked whether she missed that part of her life, Goldberg replied: “I am single.”

She continued: “I do hit-and-runs when I need it,” prompting cheers and applause from the audience.

“But I am not married to anybody [and] I don’t have responsibilities,” Goldberg added.

Goldberg then turned the topic back on her fellow hosts, asking whether they ever miss their own single days.

Her co-hosts—who are all married—reflected that life used to feel simpler with fewer obligations, though most suggested they didn’t necessarily miss being single itself.

It’s far from the first time Goldberg has spoken openly about her private life and what she’s learned over time.

During a chat with Interview Magazine, Goldberg said: “In the last 25 years, I recognized that not everybody’s cut out to be in a relationship.

“Some people are just cut out to be one-night stands.”

She added: “I don’t want to live with anybody. I have lots of people that I love, but I don’t need them living with me. I don’t need to be sleeping with them.”

And in a 2025 episode of The View, via PEOPLE, she explained when her last relationships fell short—and it wasn’t because of a lack of chemistry in the bedroom.

“I was just glad to get the hell out of there,” Goldberg said of her past relationships. “I was always having great sex, I just wasn’t having any fun.”

Maybe we should all be a little bit more Goldberg…
