Why Fans Believe The Simpsons Might End After 36 Years Onscreen

Is there a possibility that The Simpsons might conclude after almost four decades on air? Some fans are certainly speculating about it.

Since its debut in 1989, The Simpsons has grown to be one of television’s most prominent animated series. The show chronicles the escapades of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie Simpson, along with the rest of Springfield’s quirky inhabitants, across hundreds of episodes.

The series not only boasts numerous episodes but also had a successful feature film released in 2007. Now, a follow-up is in the works. Two decades after the original film, The Simpsons Movie 2 is set to premiere in theaters in July 2027.

In anticipation of the sequel’s debut, discussions have emerged regarding when and if The Simpsons might conclude. An anonymous post has fueled new speculations.

On the Fauxmoi Reddit thread, which focuses on celebrity and pop culture gossip, a user known as ‘Donut’ posted: “This cartoon titan will officially come to an end, and the sequel to its film which was supposed to be the original finale will serve as the series finale.”

Although the show isn’t directly named, fans of the iconic TV series are attempting to decipher the hint.

One fan speculated: “The Simpsons?” In response, another Reddit user commented: “That would make sense with the recent announcement, also guarantees a huge box office, but that would be crazy to see it finally end.”

“Absolutely, especially with the word ‘donut’,” a third person noted regarding the show possibly being The Simpsons. “Sad days, it’s my favorite show for the last 30 years.”

While many think the comment might refer to The Simpsons, some pointed out the show has been renewed for an additional four seasons.

Fox announced in April that The Simpsons will continue until its 40th season. Additionally, Family Guy, American Dad, and Bob’s Burgers have been renewed for four more seasons.

Michael Thorn, president of Fox Television Network, stated (via The Independent): “This new deal celebrates the eternal popularity of these iconic comedies, as well as the enduring, prolific relationship we continue to enjoy with our friends at 20th Television Animation and the brilliant creators – that goes double for Seth [MacFarlane] this time around – and incredible voices behind these contemporary classics.”

Back in July, Matt Groening, the creator of The Simpsons, reassured fans that ‘there’s no end in sight’ for the beloved yellow family.

Disney has been contacted for comment.
