Why the ‘worst seat on a plane’ might actually be your best choice, according to a travel expert

A travel journalist has caught many off guard by explaining why what is often considered the ‘worst seat on a plane’ should actually be your top pick.

Whether you’re planning a beach getaway for some sun and sea or heading to the mountains for a different kind of adventure, selecting your seat on a plane is a crucial decision.

Nowadays, it’s quite common for airlines to charge passengers extra for their preferred seat, making it even more important to choose wisely.

Most people believe the middle seat is to be avoided, and some argue that the front of the plane is the best spot.

However, travel expert and journalist John Burfitt offers a surprising perspective that challenges these common beliefs.

It was a particular flight experience that shifted this seasoned traveler’s viewpoint on the best plane seats. Now, his favorite seat is often what most passengers consider the ‘worst seat’ on an aircraft.

“We were en route from Sydney to Los Angeles, and every few minutes, the passenger behind me would cross her legs, stretch out or wriggle about,” John wrote for escape.com.au.

“As she did, her knees or feet would smack bang in the middle of my seat. I was jolting my way to the USA.”

These days, the travel expert opts for the window seat at the back of the plane near the toilets.

John wrote: “I decided the back row would be the only place I would sit on a long flight from now on.

“Sure enough, on my next flight, I booked into the back row of the cabin and, even better, my seat was the one right next to the window.

“As I nestled into that corner, I discovered what true airline love is about. I had just found the best seat on the plane.”

Sitting in this seat means you can quickly access the toilet, and as John pointed out, this row sometimes has only two seats, providing extra room.

There are more benefits, too. John mentioned that you can recline your seat without worrying about disturbing a passenger behind you.

However, John acknowledges that this seat does come with its drawbacks, such as the lack of windows at the back of the plane.

Additionally, those seated at the back often face challenges when only the front doors are used for boarding the aircraft.

Therefore, this seat might not be ideal for those with connecting flights.
