Wide-Eyed Indiana Democratic Candidate Slurs Through Car-Crash Interview Saying ‘This Is Not a Skit’

Jaime West has broken her silence after a televised Indiana forum sent her slurring, wide-eyed performance viral across social media.

West, a Democratic candidate for Fayette County council, posted to Facebook on Saturday after millions had viewed clips of her stumbling through answers at the TV3 and Connersville News Examiner event. The 38-year-old mother of five addressed what she called “the elephant in the room” in a lengthy statement that defended her condition while acknowledging the spectacle.

“I was NOT drunk or on drugs,” West wrote on Facebook. “I have a medical condition that affects my speech and motor skills at times.”

West explained that she experiences episodes related to a traumatic brain injury she suffered in 2019. She said the condition flares under stress and that she had informed forum organizers beforehand about potential difficulties. The candidate added that she had requested accommodations that were not provided, leaving her to struggle through the broadcast without support.

“I was embarrassed. I am embarrassed,” she continued. “But I will not apologize for being a disabled person running for office.”

The forum, taped for broadcast last Thursday evening at a local community center, began unraveling almost immediately. West admitted on camera that she had not prepared an opening statement as expected, then launched into disjointed remarks that jumped between local issues, national politics, and personal grievances. Her speech was notably slurred throughout, and she repeatedly rolled her eyes and threw her hands upward while speaking.

At one point during her appearance, a loud sound resembling flatulence came through a hot microphone, sending the already-surreal moment further into absurdity as West continued speaking without apparent notice.

When moderators asked what unpopular decision she would make if elected, West did not hesitate.

“Firing all Republicans,” she slurred. “I don’t even talk to them…. I don’t like being around ’em.”

She expanded on that antagonism as the forum continued, targeting supporters of the former president with particular vitriol.

“There are good Republicans out there. But then there’s these MAGAs, who are just racist and aren’t very intelligent at all,” West said during the broadcast.

Her remarks about armed resistance came unprompted during closing statements. Asked for a final message to voters, West looked directly into the camera, threw both hands in the air, and declared: “We have guns too.”

West also made an unsubstantiated claim during the forum, stating that a sheriff’s nephew had once tried to “blow my head off.” She offered no additional context for the allegation during the broadcast.

The Connersville News Examiner and TV3 posted the full forum to YouTube on Friday, where it remained available as of Saturday evening. The clip was quickly amplified by the social media account Libs of TikTok, which stressed to its followers: “This is NOT a skit.”

Social media reaction split between mockery and disbelief. One X user whose post drew approximately seven million views wrote, “This is WILD. I legit thought it was a skit/high school video project.” Another commentator joked, “She’s fully loaded—and her guns are too,” while a third suggested, “This is what happens when you’re at happy hour and are reminded you agreed to do an interview about your race.”

West’s Republican opponent, Gary Jeener Jr., has not publicly commented on the video as of Saturday.

West’s Saturday Facebook post pushed back against the narrative that she was intoxicated, sharing medical documentation she said verified her condition. She also criticized what she called “ableist assumptions” in the online response, noting that disabled candidates face heightened scrutiny. The post had drawn hundreds of comments by Saturday evening, with supporters praising her courage and detractors questioning her fitness for office.

She is seeking one of three at-large seats on the Fayette County council in the Nov. 3 general election, which coincides with this year’s midterm elections.
