An Ohio man jumped onto a moving car on Interstate 75 while trying to evade police shortly after he allegedly shoplifted from a nearby shopping complex.
At 7:07 a.m. on Monday, July 27, Miami Township police responded to a report of shoplifting at the Austin Landing Kroger. A manager called Miami Township police just after 7:00 a.m., saying two guys stole some items.
“Started throwing groceries in his car. When asked for the receipt, said he had a receipt, wouldn’t do it, and then just abandoned the cart,” a manager at the Kroger told Miami Township police.
The manager said, “He actually threw maybe about six items or so, six to 10 items in his car, and took off.”
Officers said O’Berry and the driver, David Stutter, stole more than $700 worth of groceries.
Two men fled the store before officers arrived.
When an officer stopped the suspect vehicle, the passenger jumped out and ran away. The suspect continued on Interstate 75 and then jumped onto the hood of a car that had slowed down with traffic.
The suspect was identified as Kaamil O’Berry.
A second suspect, David Sutter, was also arrested.
The fleeing suspect ran to I-75 and jumped onto the hood of a stranger’s car, which was driving on the interstate. The driver immediately slowed down as the suspect broke the windshield and attempted to carjack the vehicle, authorities said.
The incident unfolded across the northbound lanes of the interstate in seconds.
He held onto the car for a quarter of a mile.
Officers in pursuit grew closer as the motorist accelerated.
Police said O’Berry broke the windshield trying to carjack her SUV; that’s when Miamisburg police responded to help. They followed that woman’s car. Miamisburg police said O’Berry fell off and officers arrested him.
O’Berry was treated for injuries from the fall.
O’Berry was taken to Kettering Medical Center for treatment of injuries.
The driver of the vehicle was not hurt in the incident.
Both men were taken into custody on charges stemming from the shoplifting and escape attempt.
The suspect, identified as Kaamil O’Berry, was arrested on initial charges of Aggravated Robbery, Theft, and Obstructing Official Business. A second person, David Sutter, was also arrested for Complicity to Theft.
Community members expressed concern about ongoing theft at the location.
“I’ve been approached, you know, for people loitering in this parking lot Kroger’s parking lot. So, I think one of the reasons being is because 75 is so close,” Jennifer Pilalti, of Miami Township, said.
In the viral moment that followed, dash camera and bystander video showed O’Berry clinging to the hood of the moving SUV as a Miamisburg police cruiser tailed the vehicle. O’Berry jumped onto the hood of a woman’s car, who had slowed down with traffic. O’Berry broke the windshield trying to carjack the driver, according to investigators. As the vehicle continued down the interstate, O’Berry maintained his grip on the hood until he could no longer hold on and fell onto the pavement. Miamisburg police said O’Berry fell off and officers arrested him.
The incident remains under investigation by the Miami Township Police Department.
