A Spanish figure skater has received approval to proceed with his Minions-themed performance on ice after a period of controversy.
Recently, there was a buzz on the internet when it was disclosed that Tomàs-Llorenç Guarino Sabaté, a Spanish figure skater, might have to alter his well-known Minions routine due to concerns over copyright.
Fans can now rest easy as the much-anticipated performance inspired by the Universal movie is back on track.
Guarino Sabaté, a six-time national champion, was preparing for his debut at the Winter 2026 Olympics, promising to inject some entertainment into the competition.
While Disney on Ice has been popular, Guarino Sabaté planned to present a Minions-themed routine, skating to the film’s soundtrack and donning the recognizable yellow and blue attire.
Earlier in the week, his plans faced a setback when he announced that copyright issues were preventing him from performing the routine.

Addressing the situation, Guarino Sabaté posted on Instagram: “Hello all, this season I have competed with my Minions routine to bring joy and a fun style to the ice, while complying with all of the obligatory elements and demonstrating that ice skating as a male Olympic figure skater can also be fun.”
“Regrettably, just days before the Olympics begin, I was informed that I am no longer allowed to perform this routine due to copyright issues.”
The news sparked outrage among fans who campaigned for him to be allowed to perform the routine.
Now, there’s a positive turn of events as the figure skater announced he has been cleared to perform at the forthcoming Winter Olympics, much to the delight of his fans.

Sabaté shared the good news on Instagram: “I am very happy to announce that we have made it: we have obtained the licences for all four musical pieces, and I will be able to skate my Minions program at the Olympic Games.”
He expressed his gratitude to his supporters: “It has not been an easy process, but the support from everyone who has followed my case has been essential in keeping me motivated and optimistic throughout these days.”
He also thanked Universal Pictures, Sony Music, and Pharrell Williams for resolving the music rights issues swiftly, enabling him to showcase his program in Milan.
He concluded: “Right now, my only goal is to give my very best on the ice and deliver a program worthy of the affection I have received from people all around the world. I am deeply moved by the love shown to a small skater from a small federation.”
The resolution has left fans ecstatic, with many taking to social media to celebrate.
“Protect him at all costs,” one fan declared, while another remarked: “This is excellent news!”
Sabaté is set to compete in the men’s singles event next Friday, 13 February, at Milano Ice Skating Arena, and it’s an event you won’t want to miss!
