Woman dies after being swallowed by 13ft shark unnoticed

If you were haunted by the classic film Jaws, this shark encounter will likely evoke similar fears.

Shark attacks are becoming more frequent in countries such as Australia and South Africa, but the news of these incidents, particularly fatal ones, remains deeply unsettling.

Tragically, this was the case for an Australian woman, presumed to have been swallowed whole by a 13-foot shark during a swim, unnoticed by anyone around her.

This chilling incident occurred in 2014. On April 3 of that year, Christine Armstrong was participating in a routine swim with her group, traveling from Tathra Wharf to Tathra Beach in New South Wales, Australia.

Christine, described as an ‘experienced’ swimmer, was suddenly seized by the shark without having a chance to cry out for help.

Her husband Rob, who was accompanying Christine along with the rest of the group, shared with local media that the swim was intended to cover 600 meters. However, Christine had told the group she wasn’t feeling well and decided to head back to shore alone after 200 meters.

While out at sea, one of the swimmers noticed a fin approaching. At the same time, birds began to congregate, diving above the water, suggesting the presence of a shark.

The group hurried back to the shore, thinking Christine had already reached safety. Unfortunately, she encountered the shark and suffered a tragic end.

The following day, Christine’s goggles, swimming cap, and some remains washed ashore, confirming the dreadful news.

Her body was never recovered.

Although the species of the shark that attacked her is unknown, great white sharks are known to inhabit Australian waters.

“The shark was such a size and it’s consumed her basically completely – she wouldn’t have even known it happened,” Rob told reporters at the time.

Christine and Rob had been swimming with the Tathra Surf Club for 14 years, and that fateful day was supposed to be just another ordinary swim.

Following her death, the swimming club honored Christine, describing her as an ‘experienced and committed member’.

“She was a senior surf club trainer for many years. Swimming brought her much joy and many friends,” the club stated.

Christine’s harrowing tale has been revisited in a YouTube video, sparking discussions and comments from viewers.
