A student has shared her experience regarding her ‘quality of life’ after deciding to relocate to another country and commute to her school by airplane.
Amid the ongoing cost of living crisis, some individuals have taken drastic measures to save money, such as moving into a dumpster or living on cruise ships. Others have opted to relocate to different cities, accepting longer commutes.
Some individuals are going to great lengths, such as relocating so far away that they must fly to the city where they work or study. Nat Cedillo is one such person.
Cedillo and her partner Santiago previously resided in Brooklyn, New York, but they have now moved to Mexico City. The 30-year-old travels back and forth to attend her law school classes.
“It’s exhausting, but worth it,” Cedillo told The New York Post.
She takes a flight on Monday morning to JFK Airport and returns to Mexico City on Tuesday night for her class.
Throughout the 13-week semester, she has made 26 flights, completing a round trip of over 4,000 miles.
In addition to airfare, she has also had to cover the costs of lodging and food, reportedly spending over $2,000 so far.
Cedillo mentioned that she and her husband ‘love New York’ but found it prohibitively expensive, even though they weren’t living in a ‘lavish neighborhood’.
Now residing in Mexico City, they enjoy a ‘better quality of life,’ though Cedillo admits that the days she doesn’t have to commute are the most enjoyable.
Racheal Kaur, who works for AirAsia, begins her day at 5 am, leaving her home in Penang, Malaysia, to travel to Kuala Lumpur. The flight takes 40 minutes, and she returns home by 7:00 pm each day.
Describing her routine, Kaur stated: “Usually, I’m up around 4 am, 4:10 am, 4:15 am at the latest. And then, I am showered, dressed, and I leave my home by 5 am.
“And then I take a slow drive to the airport, boarding is at 5:55 am, so it gives me plenty of time to, you know, park my car, put on my shoes, walk over, get myself boarded, check into the flight, sit down.”
She concluded that this routine not only helps save money but also allows her to spend more time with her children.
