Woman whose husband died after being electrocuted in hot tub at holiday resort files $1 million lawsuit

In a tragic incident that unfolded at a holiday resort in Mexico, a woman has taken legal action after her husband suffered a fatal electrocution in a hot tub. The couple, identified as Jorge Guillen, 43, and Lizette Zambrano, 35, from El Paso, Texas, were vacationing at the Sonoran Sea Resort when the heartbreaking event happened last Tuesday (June 11).

Eyewitnesses at the resort reported noticing that Jorge and Lizette appeared unresponsive in the hot tub, raising immediate alarms among the hotel guests.

Tragically, Jorge was hit by an electrical discharge that led to his death, a devastating scene captured by CCTV footage which showed a bystander attempting to administer CPR to the couple before the arrival of emergency services.

Lizette, critically injured, was also hospitalized after the incident. In the wake of this tragedy, a GoFundMe page was created to support the couple’s family, covering the expenses of Jorge’s repatriation and Lizette’s medical care. The fundraiser description heartfeltly notes, “Our best friends have experienced a horrible accident. Jorge had a heart of gold and was always there for family and friends. The love they shared was one for ages. We are asking for your help to bring him home & help with medical expenses for her.”

Amidst her critical condition, Lizette has initiated a $1 million lawsuit against the parent companies of Sonoran Sea Resort, holding them responsible for her husband’s death.

According to the lawsuit, Lizette herself was electrocuted when she attempted to rescue Jorge from the water. The legal claim further accuses the resort of negligence, highlighting that it took the staff approximately ten minutes to respond to the emergency and that there was a failure to activate an emergency shut-off or to warn guests about the hazardous condition.

“There is no reason this should have happened,” stated attorney Tej Paranjpe, according to KFOX. “Hotels and resorts have a duty to ensure guest safety. At no point did resort staff think to engage an emergency shut-off, not to mention warn guests of a faulty, dangerous amenity.”

The lawsuit also alleges that the resort was aware of the electrical issues and failed to adequately inform the guests. Lizette is now seeking over $1 million in damages and has requested that the hot tub not be repaired in order to preserve it as evidence for the case.
