An anonymous woman has criticized her biological parents for giving her what she considers the ‘worst name ever,’ prompting her to consider a legal name change.
For parents, selecting a name for their child is a significant decision. Popular names of any given year often reflect societal trends and preferences among new parents.
While choosing a fashionable name is common, there’s something appealing about opting for something unique. The challenge is to balance originality without crossing into the realm of the absurd.
Unfortunately, one woman feels her parents pushed the boundaries of uniqueness too far, leaving her with the impression that her name was intended as a punishment ‘for being born’.
The controversial name in question is Alone.
On Reddit, Alone shared her story: “My name is Alone. I’m 20F and I feel like my biological parents gave me this name to punish me for being born. I live with my foster parents now and they’ve given me the nickname, Athena. But since I never had my name legally changed, my driver’s license and all of my documents still have me as Alone.”
Despite what her name might imply, Alone explained she is not isolated, as she has a supportive circle of friends.
She further explained: “I’ve been considering getting my name legally changed but I don’t know if I should choose Allie, Athena, or another name entirely.”
Numerous commenters on Reddit have shared their compassion for Alone’s situation and offered support.
One user suggested: “You could always make your official name Athena and just have Allie be your nickname. I get decision fatigue a lot and I can imagine it must be hard because it’s such a big decision but I think you’ll feel relief once the whole process is over.”
This user further noted that while they ‘love’ both names, Athena resonates more as it ‘denotes someone with a lot of personal strength which is sounds like you have’.
Another user offered: “If you like Allie and Athena, why not go for one first name, one middle name? Allie Athena is a very cute name. Athena Allie doesn’t quite have the same flow, but a lot of Allies are actually Allisons and Athena Allison flows quite nicely.”
Additionally, another commenter remarked: “I think getting your name changed formally to Athena would be a good call. You could still go by Allie but as far as how you’re perceived on things like job applications using Athena would be your best bet.”
