Woman’s encounter with ‘badly behaved’ child on flight divides the internet

The internet is buzzing with controversy after a recent episode on a flight from Atlanta to Denver left passengers shocked and divided. Shay-la Monnier, a TikTok user and mother-of-five, recounted the ordeal that she and her husband faced during the final hour of their three-hour and 15-minute journey. According to Shay-la, the chaos unfolded in the rows immediately around them, capturing the attention of fellow passengers both in front and behind.

Shay-la detailed the incident, which involved a young child seated between her masked parents in the row in front of her.  She described how the child, estimated to be between three to five years old, turned around and blew raspberries, inadvertently spitting on Shay-la and her husband. The unexpected behavior left Shay-la stunned, but the situation escalated when the child repeated the act multiple times.

“The kid in the seat in front of me turned around and went [does farting noise with mouth] like that with spit flying all over my face and my husband’s arm,” Shay-la narrated the unpleasant encounter. She expressed her astonishment, noting that the child’s parents seemed overwhelmed, which only added to the tension.

The situation grew more intense as the child managed to spit on them three times in total. Frustrated and at his limit, Shay-la’s husband sternly addressed the parents, “if you don’t get your kid under control, I’ll do it for you,” and suggested, “why don’t you put a mask on her, you guys are both wearing masks. Why doesn’t she have a mask if you can’t control her?”

Shay-la’s account on TikTok sparked a wide range of reactions from viewers. While some sympathized with her plight, others suggested more gentle approaches, such as offering the child crayons or a toy. Shay-la responded firmly, emphasizing the severity of the child’s behavior, “I guess you don’t understand how out of control she was. There was no talking to her; she was fighting to get over the seat and as soon as she got over, she was spitting. I’m not negotiating with a child who was spitting in my face, I’m not doing it.”

The incident has raised questions about parenting styles, with Shay-la expressing her disapproval of overly gentle parenting techniques in such disruptive situations. The story continues to stir debate online: Was it appropriate for Shay-la’s husband to intervene as he did? Should the parents have done more to control their child?
