World Cup winners set for Super Bowl style rings as furious fans demand USA never hosts again

FIFA is set to hand out Super Bowl-style rings to the winners of the 2026 World Cup after Sunday’s final on July 19.

The final, which will see Spain face Argentina at New York New Jersey Stadium, brings to a close the first 48-team FIFA World Cup, staged across Canada, Mexico and the United States.

When Spain and Argentina meet in New York, the captain of the victorious side and the team’s head coach will each be presented with temporary rings at the stadium.

FIFA has also confirmed that 30 bespoke rings, tailored to fit the players and staff of the winning squad, will be produced and delivered later.

The design is expected to feature a miniature World Cup trophy, while the inside of the band will include an engraving inspired by the heritage and culture of the nation that lifts the title.

Supporters will also have a chance to own one, with FIFA saying that 1,996 commemorative rings will be made available for fans to purchase.

Championship rings have long been associated with major American sports such as the NFL, but they are not usually part of football’s tradition around the world. FIFA says the rings are part of a limited-edition run of 2,026 in total, a nod to the tournament year.

That decision has sparked criticism online, with some fans arguing the tournament is drifting too far toward US sporting customs.

“Let’s never host the World Cup in the US ever again!”

“First the hydration breaks which are quarters (even though commentators keep slicking saying first half/second half hydration breaks). Now this, this was just the US trying to Americanise it.”

“What a disgrace… This is not the NFL.”
