Wynonna Judd has opened up about the toll her daughter’s addiction and legal troubles have taken on her own mental health.
The country legend, 62, told AARP that she became consumed by fear while trying to protect Grace Kelley, 30, during her years-long struggle with substance abuse. “I became so consumed with worrying about Grace — where she was, if she was safe, if she was alive — that I lost myself,” Judd said in the interview.

The “No One Else On Earth” singer described how the worry disrupted her professional life. “I would be packing to go on the road, and I would cry and think I couldn’t leave in case she needed me,” she added.
Judd, who shares Kelley and son Elijah, 31, with ex-husband Arch Kelley III, reached a painful realization through the ordeal. “I had to learn I can’t save her. Right now, I don’t know where she is,” she told the magazine.
When asked what she has learned, Judd emphasized persistence over control. “You try to stay present and try to fully engage with your daughter, who you can’t do anything for,” she shared. She also stressed the importance of showing up regardless of the circumstances: “You always show up, no matter what.”
Kelley’s troubles with the law began around 2015 and have continued through this year. In October 2025, she was arrested and cited for driving with a suspended or revoked license. She pleaded guilty to that offense in June and received a 15-month sentence at Rockingham County Jail in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

The incarceration created complications when Kelley became pregnant with her second child. Her attorneys requested temporary release so she could give birth via C-section this past August, but a judge denied the furlough. Instead, Kelley remained in custody and was escorted by the sheriff’s office to the hospital for the delivery.

The estrangement between mother and daughter has deepened in recent months. Judd revealed in a recent interview that she discovered Kelley’s second pregnancy through social media rather than directly. “I don’t know anything,” the “She Is His Only Need” songstress told the outlet. “I’m heartbroken, and she cut me off a year ago. I’m walking a very interesting walk right now, where I absolutely know very little. As a matter of fact, I learned about it on TikTok.”

Judd has taken on a direct caregiving role for Kelley’s first child, Kaliyah, who was born in 2022. The country star adopted her granddaughter and is raising her while Kelley serves her sentence and continues to struggle with addiction.
The singer’s candid remarks come as she continues performing while managing the complex family dynamics. Her willingness to discuss the limits of parental intervention marks a shift from earlier efforts to manage or control her daughter’s situation.

Kelley remains incarcerated at Rockingham County Jail, and her current relationship status with her mother appears unchanged since the TikTok revelation. Judd has not indicated whether she has had contact with her daughter’s second child.
The five-time Grammy winner has previously spoken about family challenges following the 2022 death of her mother, Naomi Judd, by suicide. That loss compounded the ongoing stress of Kelley’s addiction and legal issues, which have now spanned roughly a decade.

Judd’s latest comments reflect a broader theme in her recent interviews about accepting powerlessness in the face of a loved one’s addiction. The singer continues to tour and record while raising her granddaughter and managing what she describes as limited knowledge of her daughter’s current circumstances.
Judd is scheduled to continue her Back to Wy tour with upcoming performances across the United States.
