10 Burger Hacks That Will Forever Up Your BBQ Game

Because no one likes a burnt patty or a soggy bun.

#1. Wash your hands with cold water before forming your patties.

This is so bits of meat don’t stick to your palms when you’re forming your perfect patties.

#2. Indent the top of your burger.

Use your thumb to make an indent in the top of your burger. As the burger cooks and the juices try and escape, they’ll pool in the burger and get reabsorbed, instead of running down the side and getting lost in the pan.

#3. For an extra moist burger add ice.

Remember that indent you made in #2? Put a chip or two of ice in it for an extra juicy burger.

#4. Flip your patty once AND ONLY ONCE.

Don’t flip out on us. In order to maximize flavor, leave your burger in direct contact with the fire. Flipping the patty constantly forces the juices out. Also, don’t press your patty down on the grill. You don’t want those tasty juices escaping now, do you?

#5. Add mustard on your patty while you grill it.

This maximizes the absorption of flavors — how could you say no?

#6. Choose your buns carefully.

And make sure you toast both sides, equally. If you want something a bit firm, you can opt for ciabatta instead of a traditional bun. Or whatever, it’s your call.

#7. Know how to layer your masterpiece.

Layering your burger is a f*cking science. Science, we say! Fortify your bottom bun with a layer of fat, like cheese or mayo. For extra strength, add a layer of lettuce. Trust us on this. When your burger’s juices start seeping through your bottom bun, you won’t be very happy.

#8. Throw a handful of aromatic herbs on the barbecue.

Good choices are rosemary, sage and thyme. It’ll give your food a smokey, herby flavour and make the air smell heavenly.

#9. Keep your meat warm with a DIY beef-case.

Tape two foil containers together and pop your burgers inside. The foil will keep them insulated and toasty warm until you’re ready for round two.

#10. Let it rest.

On that note, leave your burgers to rest for several minutes before tucking in. This allows the juices to redistribute making for a better burger experience.

Happy eating!
