Former Starbucks employee reveals the most common mistakes customers make when ordering

We all have a soft spot for Starbucks, but there’s one aspect of this beloved coffee giant that might not warm your heart: the price tag. In the realm of U.S. coffee shops, Starbucks consistently ranks as one of the priciest options. Whether you’re a fan of a simple americano or prefer a more decadent skinny vanilla latte, it’s hard not to wince when the cost flashes on the card reader—and it seems these prices are only climbing. According to The CFO, since 2020, the average cost of a grande brewed coffee has skyrocketed by a staggering 49 percent.

However, there are clever ways to maximize your purchase, thanks to the insider knowledge shared by a former Starbucks barista with Business Insider. One simple trick is to order your cold drinks with ‘light ice.’ This means less space in your cup is taken up by ice, giving you more of the actual drink. While it might feel a bit bold to ask, baristas are generally willing to accommodate this request, and you can even select this option directly in the Starbucks app.

Another tip is to reconsider adding vanilla syrup to soy-based drinks. As a vanilla syrup enthusiast myself, I was intrigued to learn that the soy milk Starbucks uses already contains a hint of vanilla flavor. It’s not as strong as a full shot of syrup, but skipping the extra vanilla can shave a bit off your total and still deliver a satisfying taste.

Engaging with Starbucks’ rewards program is another savvy move. Similar to many other loyalty programs, you earn points with each purchase which can later be redeemed for various rewards. Accumulating 400 points can even net you a free signature cup, drink tumbler, or other coffee-related merchandise worth up to $20. If you’ve been eyeing a new stacker mug, those points could be your ticket to nabbing it without opening your wallet.

Last but certainly not least, consider skipping the bottled water. The former barista suggests asking for a cup of water instead. It’s free, reduces plastic waste, and saves you money—all good things in our book.

With these tips, you can enjoy your Starbucks run without the guilt of overspending. Happy sipping!
