Gen Z Embrace ‘Silent Walking’ Trend, Hailed as ‘Game-Changing’

It seems like everything requires a label these days, and even taking a quiet walk isn’t spared.

TikTok users are buzzing online about a new trend that’s capturing the attention of Gen Z.

If you’re still processing the concept of ‘raw dogging,’ brace yourself for a new trend taking over the internet known as ‘silent walking’.

This new trend was ‘unintentionally started’ by TikToker Mady Maio. ‘Silent walking’ is essentially exactly what it sounds like, and can be seen as ‘raw dogging’ 2.0. However, instead of being on an airplane, it involves walking along the sidewalk.

During ‘silent walking,’ you not only walk in silence but also leave behind your headphones, phone, or anything else that might divert your attention from the natural surroundings—or the skyscrapers—around you.

TikToker Charlie Health addressed the trend on her page after seeing her ‘For You’ page inundated with it. She explained that eliminating technological distractions is meant to help you ‘really focus on mindfulness and connection with our bodies’.

“It might seem boring and maybe even anxiety-inducing, but it’s actually a really great way to get in tune with what’s going on in your body and improve your mental health,” Charlie explained. “Research has shown that even light exercise when you’re unplugged from technology really has a positive impact on symptoms of depression and anxiety.”

She recommends starting with a five or ten-minute walk, ensuring your phone stays at home.

But does it really work?

“Silent walking” is more than a trend—it has proven mental health benefits. We know that walking in silence may not seem revolutionary. But in a time where most people are glued to their devices, intentionally unplugging and taking time to simply *be* with your thoughts and surroundings can significantly benefit your mental and physical health. #silentwalking #mindfulness #mindfulwalking #mindfulnessexercise

The results are mixed.

One TikTok user remarked: “This used to be the norm like 20 years ago.”

On the other hand, another user claimed that the trend ‘actually changed’ their ‘life’.

A third user said: “I feel safer with no music! N more connected to what I’m doing, nature, sounds it’s beautiful!!”

However, another user commented: “It ain’t ‘silent walking’ it’s called walking, WOWZERS.”

The term ‘silent walking’ was reportedly first coined by New York influencer Arielle Lorre back in January of this year. She praised ‘silent walking’ for allowing her to ‘smell everything’ and ‘hear everything,’ calling it a ‘grounding experience’.

“I know the hot girl walk had its moment. I’m trying to make the silent walk girl, or guy, or whatever, a thing,” she said.

So, if you haven’t already been taking quiet walks without it being a ‘trend,’ what do you think?
