A New Cafe Is Asking People To Pay For Their Meals By Doing Exercise

In a bid to encourage office workers to break their sedentary work routine, a cafe in London, England, is now accepting exercise as payment for healthy meals.

The Run For Your Bun cafe inside the David Lloyd health club lets participants swap a six-minute intensive micro-workout for a free meal from the club’s cafe.

The high-intensity circuit consists of one minute on a rowing machine, one minute on a spin bike, one minute on a treadmill, and then 60 seconds of sit ups, bodyweight squats, and lunges, with 30 seconds of rest between each exercise.

It doesn’t sound like a lot, and the calories in the meal are nowhere near the calories burned in the circuit, but that’s a deliberate decision by the health club to remind gym-goers that the point of working out isn’t to cancel out meals.

“According to our research,  British office workers spend almost 90% of the working day sat down being inactive and invariably eating lunch at their desks,” says Elaine Denton, a David Lloyd health and fitness expert.

“We want to remind workers of the importance of being active at work  and moving around more.”

The gym has so far run trials of the unusual scheme and it’s unclear how often the meal exchange will be open to the public, but they’re hoping to inspire other gyms to implement similar programs.

So forget sing for your supper — it’s time to squat for that sandwich.
