An autistic man, 33, died Friday evening after a confrontation with a staffer outside a Harlem disability center.
The incident unfolded at Quality Services for the Autism Community (QSAC) on East 129th Street shortly before 5:45 p.m., sources said. The man allegedly attacked a 54-year-old female employee at the non-profit, which provides support services for children and adults with autism across New York City.
When police arrived, they found the man unconscious. Staffers at the center had restrained him, police said.
EMS rushed him to Harlem Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The female staffer was also transported to a hospital in stable condition.
The man’s identity is being withheld pending family notification. The city’s medical examiner will determine the official cause of death.

The non-profit operates multiple locations throughout the five boroughs. Its programs include residential services, day habilitation, and educational support for individuals on the autism spectrum.
The NYPD has not announced any arrests in connection with the man’s death. The circumstances surrounding how staffers restrained him remain under investigation.
The incident marks a fatal episode at a facility dedicated to serving a vulnerable population. Advocates for people with disabilities have long raised concerns about the use of physical restraint in care settings, though no advocacy group has publicly commented on this specific case.
The medical examiner’s findings will likely shape whether the death is classified as homicide, accidental, or attributable to other causes. That determination could influence whether prosecutors present the case to a grand jury.

QSAC has not issued a public statement about the confrontation or the employee’s condition. The organization serves hundreds of individuals with autism through its various programs across the city.
