Prince Harry Wears Military Uniform During Queen’s Vigil

The Prince of Wales and the Duke of Sussex are two of the eight grandchildren of the Queen who have gathered around her coffin at Westminster Hall as she lies in state.

Prince Harry put on a military uniform for the first time since 2020 at King Charles’ request.

Since the Queen’s passing, Prince Harry has appeared in public wearing regular clothes.

The participation of a monarch’s grandchildren at a ceremony is unprecedented in history.

The Princess Anne’s children Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, and Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn, who are Prince Edward’s children, joined the King’s sons William and Harry.

The oldest of the Queen’s grandchildren is Peter Philips, 44, and the youngest is James, Viscount Severn, 14.

The eight cousins stood at various positions around the casket with their heads lowered and in silence as the people passed by.

With his brother at the other end, Prince William stood at the head of the Queen’s coffin.

The parents of Louise and James, the Earl and Countess of Wessex, watched from a podium facing the coffin.

The vigil of the grandchildren began at 18:01 BST and lasted slightly under 15 minutes.

The King and the Queen’s children participated in a similar vigil on Friday night by standing guard for around ten minutes.

“It has been the honour of our lives to have been your granddaughters and we’re so very proud of you”, Beatrice and Eugenie said in a statement before the vigil.

They said the Queen was “our matriarch, our guide, our loving hand on our backs leading us through this world” in a joint statement, adding that they already mourn her “terribly.”

“Thank you for making us laugh, for including us, for picking heather and raspberries, for marching soldiers, for our teas, for comfort, for joy.

“You, being you, will never know the impact you have had on our family and so many people around the world.

“The world mourns you and the tributes would really make you smile. They are all too true of the remarkable leader you are.”
