Twitter CEO Elon Musk met with Apple CEO Tim Cook on Wednesday at Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, California, and stated the issue that erupted earlier this week had been settled.
“Good conversation,” Musk tweeted. “Among other things, we resolved the misunderstanding about Twitter potentially being removed from the App Store. Tim was clear that Apple never considered doing so.”
Musk said on Monday that he was eager to “go to war” with Apple after the business had mostly ceased advertising on Twitter and purportedly threatened to remove the social media network from its App Store.
Musk directly targeted Cook in a series of tweets, including the problem of censorship.
“Apple has mostly stopped advertising on Twitter. Do they hate free speech in America?” Musk asked. “What’s going on here @tim_cook?”
“Apple has also threatened to withhold Twitter from its App Store, but won’t tell us why,” Musk added
Musk then launched a poll, which he has previously used to decide what he will do at the firm, asking, “Should Apple publicize all censoring measures it has made that harm its customers[?]”
Musk cited an account that claimed Apple had muted it and questioned, “Who else has Apple censored?”
Musk also criticized Apple’s app development fees, saying, “Did you know Apple puts a secret 30% tax on everything you buy through their App Store?”
Account impersonation and Musk’s backing of some conservative personalities have infuriated left-wing NGOs, with several lately pressuring advertisers to abandon their affiliation with the social media business. Several groups signed on to a letter to major advertiser executives, warning that “extremists” saw the takeover as “a new opportunity to post the most abusive, harassing, and racist language and imagery,” including “clear threats of violence against people with whom they disagree.”
The world’s wealthiest man first told marketers that he bought Twitter to have a “common digital town square, where a wide range of beliefs can be debated in a healthy manner, without resorting to violence.” He vowed that the social media platform would not become a “free-for-all hellscape” where users could breach the law with impunity.
Musk has stated that broad coverage of the acquisition and his subsequent efforts to reform the firm, including critical coverage from traditional sites, has led to use hitting all-time highs. He stated that his first aim is to remove child exploitation content from Twitter, which previous management failed to do. After an investigation revealed that child sexual abuse content had surfaced alongside large marketers’ accounts, some advertisers suspended ads on the platform two months ago.
