Some say the age of human exploration is dead. But that was before a sunken civilisation was discovered deep beneath the Mediterranean Sea, on the coast of Egypt.
Like the lost city of Atlantis, Thonis-Heracleion was almost erased from memory and sight. But unlike the mythical Atlantis, this Egytian city has actually been found.
Frank Goddio is an underwater archaeologist and modern day Columbus. He and his team found an underwater world that will make your jaws drop. Take a look for yourself:
This sunken city, lost thousands of years ago, was found in the Mediterranean Sea.
Thonis Heracleion served as an obligatory port entry for all Greek ships entering Egypt. It was founded in the 8th century B.C.
Due to a series of natural disasters, the city was lost to the sea in the 8th century A.D.
The lost city had religious significance because of the temple of Amun. Frank Goddio and his team found literally tons of ancient artifacts and treasures.
This looks like something out of a movie. But it’s very real. And very awesome.
The team of divers had to be very careful bringing these ancient statues to the surface.
These incredible objects will help archeologists piece together what life in this port city was like.
That is one big head.
This monumental discovery is a dream for any explorer/discoverer.
Before being discovered in 2000, no trace of Thonis-Heracleion had been found. Its name was almost razed from the memory of mankind, only preserved in ancient classic texts and rare inscriptions found on land by archaeologists.
We’re so lucky that the intrepid Frank Goddio was on the case.
It also begs the question — given that 95% of the world’s oceans and seas are unexplored, how many more lost cities are out there?
