A Donald Trump golf course has been secured after gunshots were heard near the former president.
This incident occurs just two months following an attempted assassination of Donald Trump, which resulted in one spectator dead, two injured, and the assassin being neutralized by Secret Service agents.
An individual has been apprehended in relation to the shooting at the Trump National Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. Officials have identified the suspect as Ryan Wesley Routh, 58.
Officials informed CNN that the gunfire was believed to be ‘intended’ for Donald Trump.
The golf course was locked down due to the ongoing situation.
Secret Service Spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi confirmed that Trump is ‘safe’.
The White House released a statement confirming that both President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris were briefed on the incident.
The statement read: “The President and Vice President have been briefed about the security incident at the Trump International Golf Course, where former President Trump was golfing.”
“They are relieved to know that he is safe. They will be kept regularly updated by their team.”
Vice-President Harris also posted a statement on Twitter: “I have been briefed on reports of gunshots fired near former President Trump and his property in Florida, and I am glad he is safe. Violence has no place in America.”
There are differing reports about the motive behind the gunshots.
The NY Post cited sources suggesting the gunfire was an exchange between two individuals and was not aimed at Donald Trump.
On the other hand, CNN has consistently reported that their sources close to the situation believe the shots were directed at Trump.
The Trump campaign released a statement in response to the shooting, which read:
“There were gunshots in my vicinity, but before rumors start spiraling out of control, I wanted you to hear this first: I AM SAFE AND WELL!“
“Nothing will slow me down. I will NEVER SURRENDER! I will always love you for supporting me.
“Unity. Peace. Make America Great Again.”
The Martin’s County Sheriff’s Office released a statement regarding the arrest made in connection with the shooting.
The statement read: “Northbound I-95 at 714 is shut down. Based on BOLO information released by Palm Beach County, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office has stopped a vehicle and taken a suspect into custody believed to be connected to a shooting incident at Trump International in Palm Beach County.”
Martin’s County is located north of Palm Beach, where the shooting occurred.
