There is a Netflix film that has been widely regarded as ‘one of the scariest films’ viewers have ever experienced.
With the arrival of the spooky season, many people are in search of the most terrifying movies they can find.
Some of the most acclaimed horror movies have been found-footage films like The Blair Witch Project, Creep, and Host. This Taiwanese film might just become a new favorite for horror enthusiasts.
The movie, titled Incantation, was released in 2022 and continues to receive praise.
Boosting its reputation, Incantation stands as the highest-grossing Taiwanese horror film ever. Reportedly, with a budget of $1 million, it earned nearly six times that amount upon release, according to Metro.
The film’s synopsis states: “Six years ago, Li Ronan is cursed after breaking a religious taboo; now, she must protect her daughter from the consequences of her actions.”
Despite sounding somewhat tame in its description, viewers have called it ‘the scariest movie [they’ve] seen’.
One Twitter user shared: “I urge every horror movie fan to watch Incantation (2022) on Netflix. It’s a Taiwanese found footage horror movie. The scariest horror movie i’ve seen in years.”
Another praised the film, saying: “INCANTATION (2022) is Taiwanese Ritual horror done right.”
The reviewer elaborated, mentioning that the film is reportedly based on true events, adding: “It’s spooky, scary and all the more jittery when you know it’s based on a true story. Real good writing, acting and engaging throughout. Probably the only well done ritual horror after The Wailing. Streaming on Netflix.”
Another film enthusiast commented that although Incantation had ‘some flaws’, it still featured ‘nerve-racking staging, a tense atmosphere, and a unique twist on the found footage concept’.
One person even suggested that the film itself carries a curse.
Posting on Netflix Bangers, they warned others: “WARNING: This is a cursed video, it might contain certain risks to watch.”
Incantation holds a 77 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer and a 63 percent Audience Score.
The horrifying story that inspired the film centers around a family of six in Taiwan’s Gushan District. In 2005, they claimed to have been possessed by various Chinese folk deities.
They accused each other of being under demonic influence and began attacking one another.
The family’s eldest daughter ultimately died from her injuries after her family turned on her.
Incantation is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
