Concerns grow as a young woman is believed to have died after authorities in Majorca found human remains at a waste facility.
Agostina Rubini Medina had been missing for three weeks, last seen during a night out with friends in Palma, Majorca, on October 2.
Since her disappearance, police have been seeking information regarding her location.
Deputy Police Chief Fernando Reboyras described Agostina as “a thin woman who had difficulty consuming alcohol.”
He mentioned, “This was made worse by the medication she was taking,” during a press conference last week.
Agostina’s mother shared with local media: “We exchanged totally normal messages as she told me that she was going to have a drink.
“We talked about the weather, how cold it was, there was nothing strange.”
It is now feared that the 24-year-old might have died after accidentally falling into a trash can.
The belief is that she was crushed by a garbage truck’s compactor before being incinerated.
Regarding her presence near the trash can, police speculate that she might have dropped something inside and was attempting to retrieve it.
The truck believed to have unknowingly picked her up was transporting seven tonnes of waste.
The Majorca Daily Bulletin reports that skeletal remains have now been discovered at the Son Reus waste disposal facility.
DNA testing at the Institute of Legal Medicine in Palma will determine if the remains are Agostina’s.
Police suggested she might have “voluntarily climbed inside one of the rubbish containers and lost consciousness,” stating that survival inside a rubbish truck is “impossible.”
Authorities tracked Agostina’s phone, noting her presence near the trash can for about 30 minutes. The signal was later traced to an incineration plant where human remains were found.
The last signal was recorded at 2.59 am local time.
Agostina, suspected to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time, was seen that night by a shop worker as she bought a bag of chips on her way home just before midnight.
Another eyewitness noticed Agostina’s bag near the large trash can 15 minutes before refuse workers arrived to collect trash.
