Flight attendant uncovers true reason they avoid assisting with bags in overhead compartments

We have all experienced the challenge of attempting to store our luggage in the overhead compartments or lift it above our heads on an airplane.

It turns out there’s a logical reason why flight attendants observe you as you struggle with your hand luggage. It’s not merely for the comedic scene of wrestling with a suitcase while passengers watch.

In fact, the real reason is quite practical, though some might still consider it impolite not to offer assistance to someone clearly in need.

Kat Kamalani, with six years of experience as a flight attendant, has shared insights on the topic, including helpful tips you might not be aware of.

On TikTok, she shared: “I have three tips that are going to help you with your anxiety in the luggage and they’re going to be life-changing for you.

“The first rule of thumb I always say is, if you can’t lift it, don’t bring it – so try at home first to see if you can even lift it above your head, if you can’t take some stuff out.”

This advice is practical, but it is likely that a fellow passenger would be willing to lend a hand.

Kamalani added: “Second tip, most airlines have these little placard cards that are going to show you how to store your luggage, so it’s going to go horizontal or vertical, so if you can just take a look at that, it saves so much time and it’s so much easier.”

Despite the potential delay, this card could be useful, but asking for assistance might be quicker.

Lastly, Kamalani explained why flight attendants are not required to assist with placing bags in overhead compartments.

She said: “Okay, crazy fact, everyone thinks that it’s the flight attendants job to lift your luggage into the bins, but it’s not.

“Actually, our airlines and a ton of airlines tell you ‘do not do this’ because there’s so many injuries with it, so if we get injured, it’s not even covered.

“So, just ask the flight attendant to assist you, and they will totally help you put it up there.”

While it might make sense to ask a sturdier-looking flight attendant for help, the airline’s policy of avoiding medical expenses might seem unreasonable.

But then again, what do I know?
