A medical expert has highlighted a common mistake people often make after using the toilet, which can lead to uncomfortable health problems.
Using toilet paper after a bowel movement seems like a natural habit, but could it actually be causing more harm than good?
Renowned proctologist Dr. Evan Goldstein suggests this traditional method of wiping may not be the best choice.
Furthermore, Dr. Goldstein expresses additional concerns for those who rely on wet wipes to ensure cleanliness.
During an appearance on HuffPost’s podcast, Am I Doing It Wrong?, Dr. Goldstein cautioned against certain wiping methods.
He pointed out that the skin around the anus is particularly delicate, and using toilet paper may lead to unwanted consequences.
While many may feel unbothered after years of using toilet paper, the doctor warns that this practice can result in irritation, tears, and, in severe cases, long-term damage.
The issue is compounded by the rising popularity of wet wipes, which Dr. Goldstein notes have led to more frequent occurrences of these symptoms.
He stated, “They are so terrible – not only for the environment, but for your hole. There’s so many companies out there throwing wipes and I think they should all be banned. I see 90 people a week, and I would say one-third of all the people coming through are coming in from wet wipe-induced issues.”
Dr. Goldstein elaborated, “Think about it – we have good bacteria, we have bad bacteria, but they are in homeostasis. They are in equilibrium. Wet wipes f*** that in a really bad way.
“I see ridiculous dermatitis and bacterial infection [in patients]. Now that they’ve messed up that microbiome, it’s causing so many problems.”
Such disruptions can lead to severe symptoms like fissures and even fungal growth.
For better hygiene, Dr. Goldstein recommends using a bidet or taking a quick shower while ensuring the area is completely dry afterward.
If toilet paper is the only option, he suggests blotting gently instead of wiping.
He also advises keeping the number of wipes to a maximum of three times.
In a TikTok video, pelvic floor physiotherapist George explained: “When you are wiping more than two or three times, that is called faecal smearing.
“So it is essentially when too much faeces matter stays at the entrance of the anus even after you have finished your poo.”
It’s certainly eye-opening information.
