Katy Perry has shared a remarkable moment when she experienced a ‘shock’ through her body upon discovering the name of the capsule that would take her into space.
At 40, the renowned pop singer announced her participation in Blue Origin’s New Shepard’s 31st mission to space. This ‘historic’ mission launched earlier on Monday, April 14, from Launch Site One in West Texas at 10am EDT.
This flight marked a significant milestone as it was the first all-women crew to journey into space since 1963 when Valentina Tereshkova was sent on a solo orbit by the Soviet Union.
The all-women crew included Perry, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, documentary producer Kerianne Flynn, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyễn, CBS Mornings co-host Gayle King, and author and journalist Lauren Sánchez, who is engaged to Blue Origin founder and Amazon chief Jeff Bezos.
Before the groundbreaking launch, Perry revealed she was moved by an unexpected coincidence involving the name of the space capsule.
The ‘Hot n Cold’ singer took to Instagram to express her amazement to her followers upon discovering that the capsule’s name had a special connection to her.
She elaborated: “I think if you know me, you know that I am always looking for little confirmations from the heavens, from my guides, from my angels, from my higher self.”
She added, “When I ask for it and I’m open to it, it’s pretty loud.”
“So when I was invited to come on this voyage, I looked up the capsule and the capsule, on the very front of it is the outline in the shape of a feather.”
Perry viewed this as a ‘total confirmation’ because her mother affectionately calls her ‘Feather.’
During a training mission, she encountered another peculiar sign when shown the capsule they would be traveling in.
“And they reveal the capsule name,” Perry continued. “And the capsule’s name is Tortoise.”
“A wave – just the most energetic wave just shot through my body.”
She explained that her mother actually has two nicknames for her: Feather and Tortoise.
“What are the chances I’m going to space on a rocket in a capsule with my symbol, this feather, called Tortoise?”
The star even shared screenshots of recent text messages from her mother referring to her by these names.
“There are no coincidences,” she concluded. “And I’m just so grateful for these confirmations and so grateful that I feel like something bigger than me is steering the ship.”
Sánchez, who coordinated this historic mission, mentioned to Elle that she selected these five women for the journey because they are all ‘storytellers in their own right.’
She stated: “They’re going to go up to space and be able to spread what they felt in different ways.”
Perry also mentioned she had aspired to travel to space for 15 years.
She expressed her desire to make space ‘glam’ and to ‘inspire’ a ‘whole new generation,’ including her daughter Daisy, to ‘never have limits on [their] dreams’ and to show them that anyone can achieve their dreams regardless of their background, ethnicity, economic status, or education level.
