Owen Wilson is among the most prominent figures in Hollywood and began his acting career over 30 years ago.
Throughout the past three decades, the beloved actor is believed to have appeared in over 60 films and has worked alongside stars such as Ben Stiller, Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Lopez, and Vince Vaughn (among others).
While Wilson has an extensive list of credits to his name, it took him no time to identify some of his top five films — several of which may come as a surprise.
Wilson sat down for an interview ahead of the release of his new AppleTV+ series titled Stick, which premiered on the streaming platform on June 4.
During this conversation, he was asked about what he considers to be the top five films of his career so far, and the complete list can now be revealed.
- Bottle Rocket
1996 film Bottle Rocket was the first movie on Wilson’s list.
He commented about the film: “I’d have to start with Bottle Rocket because that was the first movie that I ever worked on, and that was, you know, with my brothers and Wes [Anderson] directing.”
Both of Wilson’s brothers, Andrew (Whip It) and Luke (Legally Blonde) appeared in the movie alongside him.
The brief synopsis of Bottle Rocket, per IMDb, states: “Three friends plan to pull off a simple robbery and go on the run.”
It’s rated 6.9/10 on the platform; meanwhile on Rotten Tomatoes it scores 86 percent on its Tomatometer.
Not only was Bottle Rocket Wilson’s debut film, it was also the first from director Wes Anderson. The pair have subsequently collaborated on additional films like The French Dispatch, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and Rushmore together.
- Shanghai Noon
A film featuring both Owen Wilson and Jackie Chan… what’s not to appreciate?!
When speaking during the interview, Wilson said he ‘really likes’ Shanghai Noon, which reached theaters 25 years ago.
The comedy/action film follows a Chinese man who travels to the Wild West to rescue a kidnapped Princess. After partnering with a train robber, the unlikely pair confronts a Chinese traitor and his corrupt boss.
Lucy Liu (Charlie’s Angels) stars as Princess Pei Pei in the film, with Chan (Rush Hour) playing the lead role of Chon Wang. Wilson portrays robber, Roy O’Bannon.
- Wedding Crashers
Naturally Wedding Crashers earned a place in Wilson’s top five favorite films, with the actor stating that he ‘loved’ making the movie.
The 2000s comedy classic features a star-studded cast with Rachel McAdams (The Notebook), Vince Vaughn (Bad Monkey), Isla Fisher (Now You See Me), and Christopher Walken (Catch Me If You Can) appearing in it.
According to the title of the movie, Wedding Crashers follows two friends who regularly crash strangers’ weddings hoping to connect with some of the single, female guests.
Earning 7/10 on IMDb and 75 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, Wedding Crashers is essential viewing for any comedy enthusiast.
- The Darjeeling Limited
Anderson received another mention in what Wilson considers to be his top five movies with The Darjeeling Limited.
“I love being in India, and I like the story about brothers,” Wilson said about making the 2007 film, which also features Adrian Brody (The Pianist) and Jason Schwartzman (Klaus).
The synopsis provided on IMDb states: “A year after their father’s funeral, three brothers travel across India by train in an attempt to bond with each other.”
While it has 69 percent on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer, The Darjeeling Limited has a more favorable score of 78 percent on its Popcornmeter.
“Charming and heartfelt, this voyage through India is a wonderful trip. And it has an incredible soundtrack,” wrote one reviewer on the platform, while another said that it was ‘still one of my fav movies of all time’.
- Midnight in Paris
While Wilson didn’t list Midnight in Paris in the number one position specifically, it deserves that placement considering its impressive 93 percent Rotten Tomatoes score.
The movie is still classified as a comedy, but Midnight in Paris is more notably romantic than some of Wilson’s other films.
The actor portrays a screenwriter in the film who visits Paris with his fiancée (Rachel McAdams) and her family. When exploring The City of Love on his own, he finds himself mysteriously transported back to the 1920s every day at midnight. It’s then that he meets Adriana (Marion Cotillard).
Following his frequent journeys back in time, Wilson’s character finds himself becoming dissatisfied with his present-day life…
Midnight in Paris is currently available for streaming on Prime Video.
