Man Emerges from Coma, Accuses Girlfriend Before Passing Away Months Later

A man involved in a serious car accident later awoke from a coma only to accuse his girlfriend of a grave act before succumbing to his injuries.

Daniel Waterman, aged 22, from New York, was in the passenger seat while his girlfriend, Leigha Mumby, 24, was at the wheel on Interstate 95 in Florida’s Flagler County in February.

During their journey, the couple reportedly began to argue, according to court documents.

Before the accident, Mumby had discovered she was pregnant. The car eventually crashed into a tree, causing Waterman to suffer critical injuries.

Although Waterman initially survived and emerged from his coma, he unfortunately passed away on October 8 due to pneumonia.

Before his passing, he made a shocking allegation, as recounted by his mother, Heather, to syracuse.com.

In May, Waterman managed to write on a whiteboard for investigators, alleging that Mumby intentionally caused the crash.

He claimed she said to him: “I don’t care what happens. You’ll get what you deserve.”

As per an arrest affidavit obtained by People, the argument stemmed from Waterman receiving a text from a woman in New York.

According to Heather, the woman was merely a friend and a fellow Philadelphia Eagles supporter.

Heather explained that Waterman supported the Kansas City Chiefs, and both teams were matched up in the Super Bowl.

Court documents allege that Mumby, upon seeing the messages, began to drive erratically before crashing into a tree.

Mumby sustained injuries in the accident but eventually recovered, while Waterman was transferred from Florida to Upstate University Hospital.

“He never gave up,” Heather stated. “This whole entire time, he literally never gave up.”

Initially, in July, Mumby faced charges of reckless driving causing serious bodily harm and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

However, following Waterman’s death, her charges were elevated to vehicular homicide.

Presently, Waterman’s family is seeking custody of the couple’s daughter.

“We’ll do whatever we can do to bring her to us,” his mother expressed. “He wanted her raised in New York with his family.”

A GoFundMe campaign set up by the family includes a message: “Daniel was an excited, soon-to-be father of a baby girl. He wanted nothing more than to come home to her and to the family who loved him so dearly.

“There was not a day that went by that he didn’t express that he just wanted to come home. Eight long months of suffering.”
