Eddie Murphy has shared a surprising story involving a renowned Hollywood actor who allegedly made him an unexpected proposition regarding his wife.
Murphy rose to stardom with his work on *Saturday Night Live*, and he became a major movie star during the 1980s. His career continued to thrive into the 1990s with hits like *The Nutty Professor* and *Dr. Dolittle*. He also gained fame as a voice actor, portraying Mushu in *Mulan* and Donkey in *Shrek*, and appeared in films like *Daddy Day Care*, *Norbit*, and *Dreamgirls* during the 2000s.
Considering his extensive career, it’s likely the 64-year-old Golden Globe winner has attended numerous parties over the years.
In his new Netflix documentary, *Being Eddie*, released on November 12, Murphy shares stories from his life, including an unusual encounter with the late Yul Brynner.
Brynner was well-known for his role as King Mongkut in *The King and I*, both on stage and in the 1956 film. He was a pioneering Russian-American movie star before his death in 1985.
Murphy recalled meeting Brynner at his 21st birthday celebration at Studio 54. “Yul Brynner, *10 Commandments*, he was with his wife and he was like, ‘How would you like to go back to my apartment with my wife and I and party?’ And I was like, ‘Nah, I’m cool!’” Murphy recounted in the documentary.
At the time, Murphy didn’t think much of the interaction, but as he aged, he began to interpret it differently. “I realized as I got older, his wife was smiling. Did he want me to go f*** his wife?” he reflected.
Murphy humorously noted that he has often thought back on the moment and, had he understood it as he does now, he might have accepted Brynner’s offer.
“The story would [have] ended better,” he added. “You know, ‘Yeah, I went back to Yul Brynner’s and f***ed his wife, and he was watching me going, ‘Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera!’” he said, referencing a well-known line from the musical.
Despite common perceptions, Murphy clarified that he wasn’t as immersed in the party scene as people might think. “When I hung out with Rick James and them in the ‘80s, when I would see certain people in the room and you know it’s getting ready to go down … I just bounced,” he explained. “I was never curious about it. I never wanted to go in there and check it out, nothing. I just wasn’t with it.”
Murphy has also stated that he has never tried cocaine, does not drink alcohol, and does not smoke. However, he did mention trying marijuana for the first time at the age of 30.
