Anthony Joshua has been released from the hospital after what officials are calling a ‘miracle recovery’ following a tragic car accident in Nigeria that resulted in the death of two close friends.
The former heavyweight world champion was involved in a severe road accident on Monday, December 29, while traveling on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Nigeria.
At the time of the crash, the 36-year-old was sitting in the back seat of the car, which collided with a parked truck, leaving two of his team members dead at the scene.
A new statement from the Lagos State Government confirms that the British boxer has been discharged from medical care and will continue his recovery at home.
In a post shared on X and signed by Commissioner for Information and Strategy Gbenga Omotoso and Special Adviser Information and Strategy Kayode Akinmade, the statement began: “ANTHONY JOSHUA OUT OF HOSPITAL.”

“The governments of Lagos and Ogun states extend their deepest sympathies to the families of the two young men – Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami – who tragically lost their lives in the road accident involving Anthony Joshua on December 29, 2025.”
“We ask for The Almighty’s solace for their souls and strength for their families and loved ones to endure this very sad and painful loss.”
The statement also addressed Joshua, who had knocked out Jake Paul only 10 days before the incident: “Anthony Joshua was discharged from the hospital this afternoon. Though heavy-hearted and emotional over the loss of his two close friends, he was deemed clinically fit to recover at home.”
“This afternoon, Anthony and his mother visited the funeral home in Lagos to pay their final respects to his two friends, who were being prepared for repatriation scheduled for later this evening.”
Joshua had been under treatment at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, after the crash, which authorities previously suggested could have been avoided if not for ‘over-speeding’ and ‘wrongful overtaking’.

Assistant Corps Marshal and FRSC Public Education Officer Olusegun Ogungbemide released a statement earlier this week, stating: “Preliminary findings indicate that the Lexus Jeep, suspected of exceeding the legally prescribed speed limit on the corridor, lost control during an overtaking ‘maneuver’ and crashed into a stationary truck parked by the side of the road.”
After the crash was reported, Joshua’s rival Paul took to X to express his condolences to the British boxer.
“Life is much more important than boxing. I am praying for the lost lives, AJ, and anyone impacted by today’s unfortunate accident,” the influencer wrote.
