The New Year has arrived, and you might be wondering how to spend the first day. Will it be nursing a hangover, going for a hike, or enjoying a cozy day in bed?
People have different ways of starting their year on a positive note. Interestingly, data from the period and ovulation app Clue suggests that engaging in sexual activity is a common choice for many.
January 1 is noted as the most popular day globally for engaging in sexual activities, so if you’ve been considering using those Christmas gifts or trying on new lingerie, today might be the perfect opportunity.
This information comes from Clue’s annual Our Year in Cycles analysis, which examines the past year to uncover trends related to sexual activity and other aspects of life.

The data indicates that January 1, 2025, was the ‘single most popular day of 2025 for high sex drive, sex, orgasms and fantasies’.
Clue suggests the heightened libido may be linked to the psychological effect of starting fresh in the new year or feeling close to a partner after celebrating together at midnight.
Dr. Charis Chambers, Clue’s chief medical officer, explained to Metro: “People are often surprised when they hear that January 1st is the most popular day for logging sex in the UK, but to me it reflects something fundamental about how our bodies and minds work.”
She highlighted that New Year’s Day is typically spent relaxing, free from work stress, allowing ‘time, rest, and proximity to those we care about’, creating an ideal environment for intimacy.

Gigi Engle, a sex and relationships psychotherapist and resident sex expert at the dating app 3Fun, stated: “From a psychophysiological perspective, this context is far more erotically supportive than a forced ‘romantic’ holiday like Valentine’s Day, which often comes with pressure and expectations (which are two major desire killers).”
Michael Salas, a licensed professional counselor, has also noted an increase in sexual activity during the holidays, commenting that the season is often filled with emotions and stress, stemming from hectic family gatherings or an overload of plans.
Salas informed the New York Post, “This season acts like a pressure cooker,” explaining that people often turn to intimacy to find emotional stability.
As New Year’s Day signals the conclusion of the festive period, sexual activity may serve as the necessary release for many.
Conversely, September 10 is recorded as the day with the lowest libido, according to Clue’s data.
