A winter storm with potential life-threatening conditions is set to impact the US within hours, prompting at least 17 states to declare a state of emergency.
States such as Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, DC, and Virginia have issued alerts. These warnings come as severe cold, snow, and ice are forecasted to affect the regions.
Currently, nearly half of the US is experiencing extremely cold temperatures, affecting areas beyond the reach of Winter Storm Fern.
Over 50 million people, from Minneapolis to Chicago and from Dallas to Houston, are bracing for severe cold, with temperatures dropping to perilous levels on Friday even before the storm’s arrival.
The wind chill, which reflects perceived temperature, approached minus 40 degrees in Minneapolis and minus 30 degrees in Chicago on Friday morning. These conditions pose risks of life-threatening frostbite within just ten minutes.

Heavy snowfall is anticipated in numerous regions, with some states expecting more than a foot of snow in the storm’s path.
Icy conditions present an additional threat, with up to one inch of ice predicted in areas like Mississippi and western Tennessee, potentially disrupting transportation for days.
Widespread power outages are a concern, and residents are encouraged to prepare by having flashlights, candles, and blankets ready in case they need to shelter in place.
In preparation for the storm, the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) released an important advisory.
“Heavy snow, freezing rain & cold temps are expected across many states this weekend, which could cause damage and widespread power outages. While forecasts may continue to shift, now is the time to prepare. Know what to do if you get a winter storm watch or warning in your area,” they stated in a post on X.
President Trump addressed the public, encouraging caution. He stated, “I have been briefed on the Record Cold Wave and Historic Winter Storm that will be hitting much of the United States this weekend. The Trump Administration is coordinating with State and Local Officials. FEMA is fully prepared to respond. Stay Safe and Stay Warm!”
Additionally, he reposted advice from the National Weather Advisory urging citizens to ‘take the storm seriously’.
