Reddit’s Alternative Take on Super Bowl for Non-NFL Fans

I’m not particularly into football, but I would guess that avid fans typically engage with the sport across various major platforms.

These platforms likely include the NFL Instagram page, the X account for your favorite team, and the r/superbowl Reddit thread, all expected to supply news and updates about players, teams, and games. Right?

It seems like a fair assumption, but it’s actually incorrect.

While the NFL Instagram page and X accounts for teams like the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots, who are competing in the 2026 Super Bowl, do provide such content, the r/superbowl Reddit thread does not, as I quickly discovered when I attempted to learn more about the event through the platform.

Due to hashtags and Reddit pages, we’re accustomed to seeing merged words on social media, so it’s understandable to think r/superbowl would be a hub for commentary on the annual NFL competition.

However, a brief visit to the page revealed that it’s not r/super-bowl. It’s actually r/superb-owl.

The page’s description clarifies its purpose, stating it’s meant for ‘owl lovers everywhere’.

Browsing through r/superbowl won’t provide insights into quarterbacks or tight ends, but it will showcase numerous photos of various owl species, from barred owls to snowy owls, and from plump, relaxed owls to those swooping gracefully.

It’s evident that members of the r/superbowl Reddit page recognize the potential for confusion with the Super Bowl, particularly since the page was created on the same day as the big game in 2011.

Rather than getting upset over mistaken football-related posts, the page embraced the mix-up by posting an announcement in late January, stating that ‘meme posts’ would be allowed during the time around the big game on February 8.

Despite some Super Bowl references, the Reddit thread maintains its primary focus, as the meme post states: “Superb Owl Sunday is approaching.

“Our sub will soon welcome many new visitors eager to celebrate owls with us. Therefore, we’ll be permitting meme posts for the upcoming weeks. Feel free to use Photoshop, but please please please avoid AI.

“Nobody likes AI.”

So, if you’re not a football enthusiast, you can take comfort in knowing that there’s at least one social media page that will be devoid of Seahawks and Patriots discussions this weekend, offering instead a wide array of superb owl content.

It promises to be a delightful experience.
