Olympic Athlete Admits to Cheating on Live TV, Shares More Details

Olympian Sturla Holm Lægreid has contemplated whether it was the ‘right choice’ to publicly disclose that he had been unfaithful to his girlfriend.

After earning a bronze medal and feeling compelled to share more than just his elation over winning at the Winter Olympics, Norwegian athlete Sturla Holm Lægreid confessed on live television to having been unfaithful to his girlfriend.

In a conversation with Norwegian broadcaster NRK, the 28-year-old became emotional over his achievement, admitting that the victory felt somewhat hollow because he couldn’t celebrate it with his girlfriend.

The reason? Three months prior, he had cheated on her. Fortunately, he clarified that he had confessed to her about a week before his public admission.

Lægreid has since pondered on his decision to announce the news publicly after being questioned about whether he believed it was ‘the right choice’.

In an interview featured by TNT Sports, the athlete was asked to elaborate on his decision.

Lægreid stated: “I don’t know if it’s the right choice or not, but it’s the choice I made. We make different choices during our life and that’s how we make life basically.

“So today I made the choice to tell the world what I did, so maybe, maybe, there’s a chance she will know what she really means to me. And maybe not.

“I don’t want to think I didn’t try everything to get her back. Again, I don’t want to steal the show today. I hope this is just like a day or two long thing.”

Prior to this, the athlete had shared that ‘six months ago’, he ‘met the love of my life and the most beautiful and kindest person in the world’ and then three months later, ‘cheated on her’.

In revealing the truth, Lægreid described it as the ‘biggest mistake’ he’s ever made.

“I don’t know what I want to achieve by saying this, but sports have been in a different line in recent days. So I wish I could share it with her,” he explained.

He added: “You have to admit when you do something you can’t stand for, and hurt someone you love so much.”

The athlete expressed his hope that by admitting his mistake so openly, he could become a better ‘role model’.

He remarked: “I am willing to drop a nuclear bomb on NRK and commit social suicide and be hated by everyone. Because I am already hated by her, and I hope that maybe it can make her realise how much I love her.”
