Kevin Hart sparks backlash after making insensitive comment about Timothee Chalamet’s body

Comedian Kevin Hart is facing backlash after a harsh remark about Timothee Chalamet’s physique during a recent podcast appearance.

The 46-year-old comedian was taking part in an off-the-cuff roasting segment on the Call Me Daddy podcast when he made the comment about the Oscar-nominated actor.

Host Alex Cooper prompted the bit by asking Hart to “do a quick, rapid-fire roast of some celebrities” while he promotes his upcoming Netflix special The Roast of Kevin Hart.

Before naming her first target, Cooper attempted to frame the segment as harmless, telling him it could be quick one-liners and that it was “all fun games” with nobody getting upset—then she put Chalamet in the hot seat.

“Timothee Chalamet…” Hart said on the podcast as he pondered his roast, before blurting out: “Uh, the body of a German woman.”

Hart laughed at his own line, while Cooper didn’t visibly react in the moment, creating an awkward pause after the body-focused jab.

He then moved on and regained momentum, getting Cooper to laugh as he aimed jokes at other public figures including Elon Musk, Nick Cannon, Patrick Mahomes, Bruno Mars and Robert Pattinson.

Online, though, some viewers—particularly fans of the Call Me By Your Name star—criticized Hart’s Chalamet crack as “cringe,” with others saying the roasting segment simply wasn’t funny.

The blowback may be amplified by Chalamet’s past openness about being judged for his frame while trying to book major roles early in his career.

In an interview with Rolling Stone in 2024, Chalamet shared his struggle, saying: “I would always get the same feedback, ‘Oh, you don’t have the right body.’

“I had an agent call me once and say, ‘I’m tired of getting the same feedback. We’re gonna stop submitting you for these bigger projects, because you’re not putting on weight.’ I was trying to put on weight. I couldn’t! I basically couldn’t. My metabolism or whatever the f— couldn’t do it.”

He explained that those repeated rejections kept him from landing bigger studio parts—what he described as “knocking on one door that wouldn’t open.” Eventually, he said, he shifted focus.

That pivot led him toward more unusual, independent projects, which ultimately helped define his career trajectory.

“So I went to what I thought was a more humble door, but actually ended up being explosive for me,” he told the publication, in reference to the runaway success of Call Me By Your Name.

Chalamet has also spoken about changing his weight for roles. He told NPR that he even needed to add size to portray Bob Dylan, saying: “I put on 20 pounds because, believe it or not, I was thinner than the guy.”

Representatives for Hart and Chalamet have been contacted for comment.
