Lizzo reveals strict social media rules she follows to avoid ‘toxic’ culture

Lizzo has shared the firm boundaries she now sets for herself on social media, saying she wants to steer clear of the “toxic” side of online culture.

Even though social platforms can help people stay connected worldwide, trolling is still a major issue in 2026 despite ongoing moderation efforts from tech companies.

In a recent conversation with CBS Mornings, Lizzo reflected on her past relationship with social media. Host Gayle King noted that the singer previously found herself clashing with other users online at times.

The ‘Pink’ singer explained that she’s largely moved on from that phase as she’s introduced personal rules for how she engages online.

The ‘Pink’ hitmaker told CBS Mornings: “Those days are definitely behind me for the most part, I have new rules for myself. If I don’t have anything positive or helpful to say about something, or if I don’t full know about it, don’t speak on it.

“Do not read comments good or bad, I don’t check no stats, no numbers.”

Lizzo also said she’s taken an even bigger step back from posting herself, explaining that her record label has handled uploading her more recent posts because she no longer wants to be immersed in that space.

She continued: “Something about the internet has changed, and I loved the internet. I’m part of that group of artists that really got started off of the internet.”

Broadening her point beyond her own experience, Lizzo suggested that what happens online doesn’t always reflect everyday life.

Discussing social media more generally, Lizzo added: “It’s not where the real people are, the real people are in the streets, the real people are in the stands.”

Her comments come after another recent personal revelation. Last month, she said she didn’t lose her virginity until her 30s, describing herself as a “late bloomer” while speaking on the Friends Keep Secrets podcast with Benny Blanco, Lil Dicky and Kristin Batalucco.

After the hosts tried to guess when it happened, Lizzo confirmed it was in 2020.

“Isn’t that crazy?” the 38-year-old added. “I wasn’t even thinking about it… I promised myself when I was younger that I wouldn’t have sex until I won a Grammy.”

During the same podcast appearance, Lizzo also spoke about having her first kiss at 21, which she said was a bad experience.

“Y’all have no idea. It was religious for me too. Like, when we were teenagers at my church, we all made a pact that we wouldn’t do anything before marriage. And them, I was just so scared. Like, nobody wanted to kiss me,” the Grammy-award winner added.

“It was a New Year’s Eve thing and he forced it on me. I was really mad and I was like, ‘My first kiss is ruined.’ I was so mad.”
