Fox News responds after bizarre ‘mask’ conspiracy erupts following interview with former military official

Fox News has addressed online speculation after a guest’s appearance sparked a conspiracy theory, with some viewers insisting he was wearing a prosthetic mask during a live segment.

The discussion began during Tuesday’s America’s Newsroom, when retired Navy Vice Admiral Robert Harward joined by video to talk about the situation involving Iran.

Appearing alongside hosts Bill Hemmer and Dana Perino, Harward was speaking about President Donald Trump’s negotiations with Iran. But rather than focusing on his remarks, some viewers fixated on the way his neck looked on camera.

As the clip spread across social media, people pointed to what they described as a noticeable “mark” on his neck, with some suggesting it looked like the edge of a mask.

“A US Navy Admiral appeared on Fox looking like he’s wearing a mask,” wrote one viewer on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Another echoed: “Look at his neck!”

Others pushed back on the claim and argued the effect was caused by the video feed rather than anything Harward was wearing.

“Navy Vice Admiral Robert Harward IS NOT wearing a mask. It is referred to in production circles as “video artifact.”

If you watch what appears to be an opening right below the mask, it moves simultaneously with his mouth. That’s because it is his mouth.”

After the footage gained traction online, the network issued a response saying the appearance was the result of lighting.

“Vice Admiral Robert Harward appeared on FOX News Channel earlier this week via a remote, mobile camera operated by an outside vendor,” FOX News said in a statement to Mediaite.

“During the interview, lighting conditions in the van contrasted with the vice admiral’s jacket, which caused a shadow to appear on his neck,” they continued, confirming that ‘no such shadow’ was visible on his neck.

Harward later returned to the channel on Friday for The Story, again to discuss the Iran war, and this time the shadow-like effect was no longer visible.

Separately, Harward’s name had previously appeared in political reporting. In 2017, it was reported that President Trump had offered him the role of national security adviser.

Foreign Policy reported at the time that the President was ‘surprised’ when Harward asked for a few days to consider the offer.
