Fans and members of the NASCAR community had the chance to honor Kyle Busch during the Coca-Cola 600 ceremony, held days after his unexpected death.
Busch’s family shared the news on May 21, saying the two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion had died following a “severe illness”.
He was in his 22nd full-time season competing at NASCAR’s highest level. Across his Cup career, Busch captured championships in 2015 and 2019, earned 63 race wins, and sat ninth on the series’ all-time victories list.
“On behalf of the Busch family, everyone at Richard Childress Racing and all of NASCAR, we are devastated to announce the sudden and tragic passing of Kyle Busch,” a joint statement from the Busch family, Richard Childress Racing, and NASCAR read.
“Our entire NASCAR family is heartbroken by the loss of Kyle Busch. A future Hall of Famer, Kyle was a rare talent, one who comes along once in a generation. He was fierce, he was passionate, he was immensely skilled and he cared deeply about the sport and fans… NASCAR lost a giant of the sport today, far too soon.”

It has since been reported that Busch died after severe pneumonia developed into sepsis.
He is survived by his wife, Samantha Busch, and their two children, Brexton and Lennix. All three attended the Coca-Cola 600 ceremony, where supporters and fellow drivers paid tribute. The appearance marked the family’s first time in public since his death.
Busch, 41, had been scheduled to race in the NASCAR Cup Series event at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
NASCAR CEO Steve O’Donnell shared a message about Busch during the pre-ceremony proceedings.

“Every racetrack was Kyle Busch’s home. He competed like he had something to prove every single race, when in reality he had already proven everything,” he said, per Fox News.
“What I think we’ll miss the most isn’t the wins. It’s the guy who quietly wanted to help a teammate, give some advice, the husband, the father, the guy who quietly did thing for others when no one was watching.”
Addressing Busch’s family directly, O’Donnell added: “Samantha, I want you to know that this sport stands with you, and you and your children are NASCAR family forever. Brexton and Lennix, your dad loves you with all his heart. Everyone gathered here, everyone behind you, everyone watching on TV and all those people up in that grandstand, they are your family and we’ve got you.”

As the moment concluded, Charlotte Motor Speedway—capable of holding up to 95,000 spectators—went silent after O’Donnell asked for a moment of reflection in Busch’s honor.
Afterward, a trio of bagpipers performed ‘Amazing Grace’ as Samantha Busch and many in attendance were visibly moved.
